The scent of a fruit brought to Europe by Phoenician merchants by sea. It has been depicted by artists such as Donatello, Leonardo and Brunelleschi. A symbol of vital energy, humility, charity, fertility, wealth and union, the pomegranate often adorned the fine fabrics for court ceremonies.
Once used primarily to decorate gardens and for domestic use, today it is increasingly grown in large quantities in Tuscany, where it is commonly known as Melangrana.
